Rome, Italy, is the location for the 2001 World Summer Games for the Deaf, sometimes called the "Silent Games." First established in 1924, these games are the oldest continuing games outside of the Olympics and are held every four years.

Winter World Games for the Deaf

The next Winter World Games for the Deaf are scheduled to be held in Sundsvall, Sweden in 2003. These Games started with very humble beginnings in 1949, hosting only 33 athletes from 5 different countries. This only served to foster the Olympic purpose "where the most important thing is not to win, but to take part."
